COTTAGE PATH

Staying Busy While Waiting

While waiting for our new range, refrigerator, and backsplash to arrive, we decided to work on the dining room. I had already painted the walls (I had to remove the painter’s tape blue color). But the room had a formal feel that I wanted to stay away from in this house; I wanted a more cozy cottage feel. And looking into the kitchen from the dining room and seeing the shiplap walls, I thought we should continue the same look. Tony started with the ceiling and then moved to the walls, where we discovered more of the past. We removed one layer of sheetrock to find another layer with wallpaper and wainscot wood paneling. It took one full day per wall to remove. We also found evidence of young children living here in the past and, judging by the wall treatment, most likely early seventies.

Once the walls were stripped of the double layers of sheetrock, wallpaper, and paneling, all except the window wall. Leaving that wall with the sheetrock helps insulate the house from the heat. Speaking of heat! Everyone here tells us that this past June, July, and August, with temperatures consistently over 100 degrees, is not normal. I primed and painted the shiplap.

As Tony was removing the sheetrock on the walls, I was looking at the two doors that lead to the hall and the other leading to the kitchen. And wondering why they were there in the first place. They also had an extra trim on the door frame (Tony didn’t like how they installed these doors). I turned and looked at the double doorway leading to the living room, and the edge of the opening still had the hinge markings and trim from when there had been double doors. I grabbed my measuring tape and measured the spacing of the hinges, then measured the hinge spacing of the two doors; they matched! By moving them back where they belonged, Tony could remove the added framework and the passageway to the hall and kitchen. They now look the way they had initially. Now that the doors are back in place, I need to decide whether to paint them white or the color of the pantry doors in the kitchen. The doors are not closed in this picture and need to be adjusted.

We removed the blinds on the windows and put up sheers and I made new draperies out of….

These have a raw linen look and no seams and come in many sizes and weights! I’ve used them for different projects in the past.  Home Depot carries this brand and this size for $23.00.

Tony will be building two large shelves to put above the sideboard for me to display and fill this space with family photo’s.

Appliances and backsplash came!
